Highlights

Diana and David are visiting Marion Ravenwood when she receives a letter from Sir Richard Lesley-Smith, a leading Egyptologist from Arkham, and Marion’s former teacher.

In 1911 Sir Richard discovered the mummy of a handmaiden of Nephra-Ka and sent it to America for further study. Unfortunately, it was sent on the Titanic and lost when the ship sank on April 4 1912. Sir Richard is now leading an expedition on a dig near Libya to discover the tomb of Nephra-Ka, and has invited Marion to join him there.

The following day Marion receives another letter from Sir Richard stating he has found another servant of Nephra-Ka and is bringing it back to Cairo for further examination. Excited by Sir Richard’s finds, Marion decides to travel to Tanis. David volunteers his motor yacht for part of the journey, as far as Port Said. From there the party travels by road to Cairo.

On arriving at the museum in Cairo, Marion is informed that Sir Richard has died under mysterious circumstances. His body was found in the basement examining room that morning by one of the museum staff. The party undertakes to investigate the circumstances surrounding Sir Richard’s death.

The party learns that Sir Richard was killed by a scarab beetle that was hiding in the mummy. The scarab beetle tries to kill the party and, but for some fast footwork on David’s part and Diana’s skill with a 12-gauge shotgun, would have succeeded.
